Diamondhead/Conquest of Steel
Diamond Conquest!
Popped along to Eddie’s No: 8 in Brum to see the latest ‘Incarnation’ of Brian Tatlers Diamond Head! With much in trepidation! As they’d given ‘Mega-deth’ a real run for their money when on support duties on their recent tour of Britain? Got a pleasant surprise too as old friends ‘Conquest of Steel’ were warming up the crowd very well with their ‘Metal Antics’, You’ll honestly never see a band enjoying themselves so much ever ! They carry on in the true 80’s N.W.O.B.H.M (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) style with their ‘Spinal Tap/Fun Rock?’ It’s all done tongue in cheek! Well you would have to with the songs like ‘Fisting in the name of metal!’ containing lyrics like ‘Bang your head in the name of Satan!’ They’ve definitely bettered 100% tho’ now! Talking to the guys I was given (gratefully) their new album! WOW! What a progression from ‘Priestess of Metal’! They now sound so much more ‘slicker’ with less cheese! More ‘light and shade’ than Maidens ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ and more ‘Riffs’ than ‘Best Air Guitar Album’ in the world ever! Plus more ‘Witches, Bitches, Devils’ and ‘Victory and Death’ than ‘Lord of the Rings’! So go grab a slice of these ‘Metal-Gods’. A good crowd greet Mr. Tatler & Co as they lead the set with a mini teaser of the ‘Am I Evil’ intro then into the ‘archives’ for ‘The Prince’, ‘Helpless’ and ‘Lightning to the Nations’ to name a few! New singer chappie Nick Tart glides easily between current and classic styles, fitting both so well you hardly notice! He sounds kinda like Phil Lewis (LA Guns) meets Robert Plant at times? The new CD, it’s a 47 min solid classic already! ‘Mine all Mine’ the new single, ‘Nightmare’ and ‘Give it to me’ all riffs abound. In ‘Fallen Angel’ too! A fave of mine is ‘Alimony’ with its stop start rock ‘n’ roll intro it’s a ‘Live Must’! With 2nd guitarist ‘Mills’ doin’ the solo, adding depth to the sound givin’ an almost ‘Thin Lizzy’ guitar duel feel at times! Well ‘Lizzy’ must ‘ave been a big influence as ‘Brian’ did start ‘Dizzy Lizzy’ a tribute between ‘Diamondhead reformations as a side line? ‘Borrowed Time’ slips in effortlessly from the old stuff along with many others like ‘Sucking my Love’ too! That one had me thinking along with ‘To the Devil his due’ off the Canterbury Album – Great Choice! ‘Truckin’ off ‘Death and Progress’ I’m sure there was a ‘Heat of the Night’ plus a bit of ‘Dead Reckoning’ thrown in for gud ‘Riff’tastic measure? Guess wot too? After a bit of chance to make sum noise – Yeah you guessed it’s a ‘Bostin’ ‘Am I evil?’ when the whole place went MAD! So you wonder why ‘Diamondhead’ had such an effect influence on the like on Metallica and Megadeath, well just look at the ‘Riffs’ and ‘Construction’ of this classic rock band’s catalogue!
