NAZARETH & IRON HORSE
Stourbridge
Rock Café 2000

17th February 2006

Iron-Manaz!

Got together with two old mates to see one of Scotland’s Greatest Exports!  ‘Nazareth’! – Legendary Hard Rockers featuring original singer Dan McAfferty!

After a few pints and a chat, the ‘Café’s’ filling up nicely and then a tall blonde tattooed figure appears on stage and said ‘Oi You Lot- We’re gonna play some covers for ya!’ whilst thinkin this isn’t the ‘Lizards’ who we’re biked as support?

‘Breakin the Law’ starts off an impressive set of Rock Album tracks and hits from the past!  Straight into Lizzy’s ‘Don’t Believe a Word’ too!  It took me a while to work out who it was then it clicked – ‘Iron Horse’ with ex saxon ‘John Wardie the frontman’! To say the least!  Quite an impressive presence!  Combine the tattoos with Lily Savage? Noddy Holder’s gruff loud voice and style possible thrown in a little Chubby Brown for the fun element and I think you’ve got the picture?

13 tracks in total , they really got the crowd warm’d up to say the least!  Two versions of the great ZZ-Top’s ‘La Grange’ and ‘Tush’ splitting em up!  Along with an awesome ‘Rocky Mountain Way’.

With much hilarity and antics, the guys (some ex-handsome beasts!!) had as much fun as us! Even goin as far as to say ‘I f**kin hate this song!’  with the whole band laughing away!  Finishing up the set after an attempted break, but being brought back – its saxon’s ‘Wheel of Steel’ and another great Iron Horse version of ‘Doctor Doctor’! rounds things off nicely!  I’m definitely seeing these guys again!

Next up, the ‘Naz!’ Would these old rockers pull it off!?  They’ve recently come back from a tour of Germany after gettin back together a few years ago!

Well we’re to be proved that the old stuff’s still king as they hit the stage hard and heavy with ‘Razamanaz’ then ‘Kentucky Woman’!  Calming it down a bit ‘Sunshine’s’ back with ‘Bad Boy’ and ‘Holiday’!  Between tracks there’s introductions, banter and refreshing stories about how tracks came about.  ‘White Bicycle’ is spoken about fondly and how a trip to Amsterdam inspired it! – A bit of rock history perhaps?  ‘Telegram’a fave! Meets ‘Hair of the Dog’ the great ‘Son of a Bitch’ – broken up by the use of bagpipes being used for the vocal effect!  The sets a blinder being like a  greatest tracks and hits package?

‘Shanghai’d in Stourbridge’ (soz Shanghai) meets up with ‘Whisky Drinkin Woman’ ? about singer-man-Dan’s ex-wife HA!  Then ‘Love Hurts’ with Dan McAfferty’s rough vocal style gets all emotional then into ‘Nite Woman!’

Ending off nicely it’s a sing-a-long fave ‘Fallen Down Angel’ with an encore of ‘This Flight Tonite!’  I’m sure everyone’s wishes fulfilled!  A great set packed with fave tracks!  We all really enjoyed both bands – only downfall was not meeting ‘Nazareth’ as they shut the coach door on us not to be disturbed, pity eh?

Cheers
