Andre & Co
Well tonite it’s down the Red Lion for a surprise Birthday Bash for Mark ‘Vatchy’ and as it’s his 40th it’s a bit special! Its cold out so as I walk into the pub my glasses ‘steam up’ and can’t see a thing! As I clean my glasses I’m blasted with Led Zep’s ‘What should & shouldn’t be’! Am I in Earls Court in 1973 at a Zep gig? As I’m supposed to be ‘Red Lioning’ it! Then as I can see again, it’s Andre doing his thing – this time with an electric set. ‘Ramble on’ is next up followed by Stevie Ray Vaughns ‘Pride and Joy’ done to perfection in true ‘S.R.U’ scratchy blues style! Tonites gig is a top secret affair as we all had printed invites to ‘Vatchys’ total surprise! Next up an excellent ‘Goin to California’ and ‘Rain song’ working well with just guitar and bass. Then a sing I didn’t know ‘Custard Pie’ by Zeppelin off their Physical Graffiti LP – talk about extra filling!! Then a short break and one of tonites many guests is ‘Baz’ from Kidderminster doin the Beatle’s ‘Rock my bacon’ Jam’s ‘that’s entertainment’ then ‘Waterloo Sunset’ – kinky or wot!! Andre’s back to join him in ‘Angels’ putting on his spotted acoustic guitar then ‘House of the rising sun’ just to bring out the animal in you! ‘Dave’ is up next with his own track ‘Soldier Boy’ an anti-war style ballad then a comical ‘I love my bed’ with Dave doin a snoring bit in the middle – showing 2 sides to the style of this entertaining genius! One to sleep on – perhaps!! ‘Syd’s up next with ‘Andre’ on harmonica doing ‘Stand by me’ with everyone in the packed pubs support. Back again with Andre and Co ‘Riders on the storm’ preceded by a teaser of ‘Roadhouse Blues’ catches all the atmosphere of the original record, all that’s was needed was the ‘Raw storm’ effects! In classic style with his big Gibson sound, Andre and Co does ‘Dazed and Confused’ and ‘Babe I’m gonna leave you’ both in true bluesy style. By now it’s well after time and we’re given the treat of ‘Pinball Wizard’ by The Who just to round off an excellent ‘Surprise Sell-out’ for Vatchys 40th – One to remember!! Lee
